Abstract:

In today's dramatically restructured healthcare work environments, organizational trust is an increasingly important element in determining employee performance and commitment to the organization. The study aimed to explore the relationship between job empowerment of the head nurses & staff nurses and their organizational commitment at Benha University Hospital, The study sample consisted of 260 staff nurses(175 nurses work in medical units and 85 work in surgical units ) and 29 head nurses(19 work in medical units and10 work in surgical units). Data collection included two questionnaire sheets to collect data regarding to elements of empowerment (19) items, dimensions empowerment (15) items. The staff nurses and head nurses completed the questionnaire using 5 points likert-type scale. Another questionnaire sheet is to measure nurses attachment to their organization, it included (14) question. The result showed that there is significant negative correlation between all elements of empowerment and total commitment scores. There is a significant positive correlation between dimension of empowerment and total commitment scores.There is significant positive correlation between dimension of empowerment and total commitment scores, all elements. Staff nurses and head nurses in surgical units tend to be more empowered and committed than medical units. Staff nurses perception related elements of empowerment higher than head nurses related (resources and formal power). These studies recommended that must be conducted for nurses and head nurses about the elements and dimensions and how to create an empowered environment through aclimate of support, information and shared vision and goals. Moreover, enhancing for autonomy, responsibility and participation through their work to increasing of organization commitment.
