Thisstudyexaminedifwheatgermoil(WGO)hasgastroprotectiveimpactsagainstethanol-inducedgastriculcerinrats.Ratswereassignedintocontrol,WGO,ethanol,omeprazole+ethanol,andWGO+ethanol.WGOpreventedgastriculcerationanddamageinducedbyethanol,thesameeffectinducedbyomeprazole,awidelyknownmedicationusedforgastriculcertreatment.WGOreducedgastriculcerindex,nitricoxide,andmalondialdehydelevelsinthestomach.WGOboostedtheexpressionofnuclearfactorerythroid2-relatedfactor2(Nrf2),hemeoxygenase-1(HO-1),Bcl2,andtheantioxidants.WGOshowedinflammatoryandanti-inflammatoryimpactsthroughthecontrolofinterleukin(IL)-1β,Tumornecrosisfactoralpha(TNF-α),andIL-10thatwerealteredinethanol-administeredrats.Ethanolup-regulatedcaspase-3andnuclearfactor-kappaB(NF-kB)expressionandshowedhistopathologicalchangessuchasnecrosisandmucosaldegenerationthatweremitigatedbypre-administrationofWGO.Moreover,WGOdecreasedgastricimmunoreactivityofNF-kBandincreasedtransforminggrowthfactorbeta-1(TGF-β1)thatwereassociatedwithupregulationofNrf2,hemeoxygenase-1(HO-1),andantioxidantexpressionandproduction.Inconclusion,WGOreducedethanol-inducedstomachtoxicitybyregulatinggenesinvolvedinoxidativestress,inflammation,andapoptotic/antiapoptoticpathways. |
