Two field experiments were conducted in the Research and
Experimental Station. Faculty of Agriculture at Moshtohor. Zagazig Universty
during 1990 and 1991 seasons, to study the effect of sources and rates of
nitrogen fertilizers on yield and yield components of maize cultivar double
hybrid 215 and correlation between grain yield and yield components characters.
Each experiment included 15 treatments which were the combination of three
sources of nitrogen fertilizer (urea, ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulphate)
and five level of nitrogen (60.75 90.105 and 120 kg N/fed.) in complete
randomized block design with four replications.
Results obtained indicated that different sources of nitrogen fertilizer
had no effect on plant height, ear height. ear diameter and number of rows/ear.
whereas number of ears/plant. ear length, shelling % and 100-grain weight were
significantly affected by nitrogen sources in one season out of two. Application
of ammonium nitrate and urea were similar and both gave higher number of
grains/row, ear weight and grain weight/ear in both seasons than ammonium
sulphate. However, ammonium nitrate and urea gave the highest ear and grain
yield/fed. in the second season. The differences between urea and ammonium
nitrate had no significant affect on ear and grain vield/feddan in the first season.
Plant height. ear height, yield components characters, ear yield and
grain yield/feddan were significantly increased by increasing N level up to 120
kg/feddan.
The effect of the interaction between sources and rates of nitrogen
fertilizer on ear weight, shelling percentage and ear yield/fed, were significant in
one season only. The highest ear yicldlfeddan was obtained from applied
ammonium nitrate at 120 kg N/fed. in both seasons. Ammonium sulphate
seemed to have been subject more loss by NH. volatilization, particularly in such
a soil high in pH.
Positive correlation coefficient was obtained between grain yield/fed.
and each of number of ears/plant. ear length. number of rows/ear. ear weight.
grain weight/ear as affected by N level. Also positive correlation coefficient was
obtained between grain yield and each of shelling percentage and 100-grain
weight as affected by N forms.
