Nowadays, health care center personnel are facing more harsh behavior than ever before, all over the world. Of all hospital staff, nurses are most exposed to verbal, emotional, physical and even sexual violence. Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to assess of work place violence (WPV) against nursing personnel at Benha University Hospital through identifying the types of WPV experienced by staff nurse. Determining factors that lead to WPV against staff nurses. Assessing the staff nurses reaction toward WPV. Assessing the head nurse’s role to prevent WPV against staff nurses. Methods: Descriptive explanatory study was utilized to conduct this study. The study was conducted at Benha University Hospital in Benha City. Purposeful sample of (220) nurses (males & females) were recruited for the study, (55) head nurses who are working in Benha University Hospital during the time of data collection. Tools for data collection Four tools were utilized for data collection of this study, the WPV types questionnaire, the WPV factors questionnaire, the staff nurses reaction toward WPV questionnaire. The head nurse’s role to prevent/avoid WPV questionnaire. Conclusion: It may be concluded that nurses experienced different form of WPV (verbal, physical, sexual).the main perpetrators of WPV against them were visitors and patients. They perceived the factors related to (nurse, head nurse, hospital) that contributing to WPV, experiencing WPV inducing some attendance problems, poor work productivity and performance, psychological reaction of nurses. Head nurses had satisfactory role to prevent / avoid of WPV to word staff nurses. The study recommended: Develop training program for new nurses by the hospital about violence causes, types, how to deal with abusive persons and how to prevent or avoid violence. Establish policy and procedures for responding to and reporting violence incidents in the workplace. Further research is needed to study strategies that should be adopted to control violence. |
