Abstract:

Sexual harassment has a negative effect on university students, self-esteem and self-assertiveness enhancing best results to facing it. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of nursing intervention for Benha University female students regarding sexual harassment. Research design: A quasi experimental research design was utilized in this study. Setting: The study was conducted in of Faculties in Benha University it includes seven Faculties from total fifteen Faculties. The sample: Stratified random sample resulted in female students in the first grade of Faculties included in the study. Tools utilized in this study comprised a): A structured interviewing questionnaire to assess socio-demographic characteristics of studied sample and knowledge regarding sexual harassment; b): Self-esteem scale; and c): Assertive behavior inventory scale. Results: The students of Practical Faculties with good knowledge pre intervention % improved to post intervention, compared by the students of Theoretical Faculties with good knowledge pre intervention improved to post intervention. The students of Practical Faculties with low self-esteem pre intervention decreased to post intervention, compared by the students of Theoretical Faculties with low level of self-esteem pre intervention decreased to post intervention. The students of Practical Faculties with low level of assertiveness pre intervention decreased to post intervention, compared by the students of Theoretical Faculties with low level of assertiveness pre intervention decreased to post intervention. Conclusion: Both studied students Faculties showed improvement in knowledge post intervention than pre intervention, also showed improvement in self-esteem and assertiveness post intervention than pre intervention and there was statistically significant positive correlation between total self-esteem and total knowledge post nursing intervention and there was statistically significant positive correlation between total self-esteem and total assertiveness in both studied students Faculties pre and post nursing intervention. Recommendations: Benha University in collaboration with the women rights should formulate a workable policy against the various forms of female students sexual harassment, and ensure its implementation. Encourage students victims to report sexual harassment.
