Abstract:

Building envelope is the defense line of indoor environment in the inevitable confrontation with the outdoor environment. It has various functions which effect on the whole building. Energy utilization in buildings is affected by many characteristics of building envelope; one of the most important aspects is the thermal performance. It is essential to use technological tools and applications for both predicting and enhancing the thermal performance of building envelope. On the other hand, a review of related researches findings from the field of environmental psychology shows that humans are aesthetically attracted to natural contents in terms of biophilia. These features are also found to have positive effects on human functioning. However, opportunities for contact with these elements are reduced in architectural practice. Biomimetic optimization algorithms could be used as an integrating key which is based on biophilic design and heuristic algorithms through biomimicry applications. The research seeks to create architectural design strategy based on biophilic concept, biomimicry applications, thermal simulation and heuristic algorithms as a computational tool through a parametric design of building envelope to control the indoor environment qualities of buildings by controlling thermal performance of building envelope. At the end of the research, a proposed building envelope is presented and discussed for enhancing thermal performance.
