Outdoor insulators of the high voltage power networks usually expose
to various weather conditions which include contaminations, rain, fog,
and dew during their service life. These conditions cause an
intensification in the insulators surface conductivity, hence a leakage
current (LC) is created on the insulator surface. If this LC exceeds a
certain limit, it causes a complete flashover on the insulator string of
high voltage transmission line. Accordingly, a complete cut-off of the
electricity feeds for the consumers occurs. So, in this paper, a novel
technique for utilizing the Ultraviolet (UV) images is presented to
estimate and measure the LC intensity. It is based on capturing images
by the ultraviolet camera of the corona formation on the insulator
surface. Then, these pictures were analyzed using image processing
analyzer. After that, an adaptive neuro-fuzzy technique was applied to
find the approximate value of LC from the analyzed data. As a result,
the obtained values of the LC from the suggested method were almost
matched with the values obtained from the direct measurement method,
where this technique was scientifically and mathematically analyzed.
