Abstract:

A finite element method for the solution of the laminar incompressible boundary layer equations is described. The equations are transformed by passing to von Mises variables, with the stream function as independent variable, which reduces the problem to the search for a single unknown function. The formulation is based on the Galerkin method. The results for a flat plate are in excellent agreement with results obtained by Howarth s method, even near the wall.
