Abstract:

Background: Role clarity is important in the transition from student to professional role, as it prevents role overlap, role conflict, and role stress, so the nursing intern students must be aware about their role during nursing internship year. Aim of the study: The study was conducted to determine the nurse-intern’s role during nursing internship year at Benha University Hospitals. Methods: Descriptive study was used to achieve the Aim of the study. The study was conducted at two settings; Benha University Hospitals and Benha Faculty of Nursing. The study subjects were (170) participants were in three groups, nurse-interns group include (100) nurse-interns were at Benha University Hospitals, nursing faculty members and their assistants group include (40) participants and hospital nursing managers groups include (30) participants. A questionnaire sheet was prepared by the researcher used for data collection. The results indicated that very high percentage of agreement upon all items of nurse-intern’s roles in the three groups of the study subjects. There weren’t statistically significant differences among the nurse-interns and their supervisors regarding the roles of the nurse-interns as caregiver, educator, communicator and researcher. Statistically significant relations were done between nurse-interns opinions of their roles and their type of secondary education, and their marital status. The nurse-interns opinions’ regarding their role was significantly affected by their type of secondary education and their marital status. Conclusion: It is concluded that the great majority of the three groups of study subjects have highest percentage of agreement up on most components of the nurse- intern’s roles that have been investigated. Additionally, there was no difference in most opinions of both nursing intern students and their supervisors about nurse intern’s roles during internship year. The study recommended that every nurse intern should be aware about her role during internship year and apply her role carefully, also cooperation and collaboration between hospital staff and nursings faculty teaching staff was recommended.
