Abstract:

On the river Nile, Egypt, there are a number of main hydraulic structures such as, barrages and regulators; in addition, there are many branches and sub-branches across the irrigation canals network. The head regulators are exposed to formation of hydraulic jump causing erosion of the bed downstream, which can lead to failure of the hydraulic structure. Therefore, it is of extreme importance to study the phenomena of hydraulic jump formation. The objective of this study is to clarify the relation between length, height, and amount of energy loss and different types of hydraulic jump downstream the radial gates. Physical model was executed at the Hydraulic Research Institute (HRI) to investigate the hydraulic jump downstream a radial gate. This was investigated at different discharges for two different tail-water depth.
