The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Benha University has provided a number of health conditions and standards for selecting a healthy sacrifice to ensure the health of the animal on the occasion of Eid al-Adha. These are:
The sacrifice should be visibly healthy and free from any diseases, without signs of illness such as lameness, thinness, or emaciation.
✅ The animal should be active and show no signs of lethargy or sluggishness.
✅ The mucous membranes should be intact and pink in color, without signs of inflammation or discharge.
✅ The body temperature should be normal, with no fever or elevated temperature.
✅ The animal should be free from blindness and poor vision, with bright eyes.
✅ It should also be free from skin diseases, with no nodules, ulcers, or skin or subcutaneous swellings.
✅ The animal should be free from respiratory diseases and associated symptoms such as colored nasal discharge, coughing, and severe shortness of breath.
✅ It should be free from digestive diseases and associated symptoms such as colored diarrhea, excessive salivation, oral ulcers, or bloating.
✅ The appetite should be normal, and the animal should accept food and water.
✅ The sacrifice should also be free from external parasites.
✅ In the case of sheep, the fleece should not show any unnatural color changes or excessive shedding.
✅ It is essential to ensure that the animal has not received any type of treatments or medications before purchase, especially antibiotics.
✅ Compliance with the legal age for sacrifice is required: the sacrifice must be at least two years old for cattle, one year for goats, six months for sheep, and five years for camels.
Prof. Mohamed Mohi Ghanem, former Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary at Benha University, advised that the sacrifice should be slaughtered inside approved abattoirs to ensure the safety of the following procedures:
✅ Ensuring the safety of the slaughter process through veterinary supervision.
✅ Preventing the possibility of transmitting infections through the animal's blood.
✅ Full veterinary supervision of the slaughter process to ensure the safety of the meat.
✅ Safe disposal of waste to prevent environmental contamination.
