Benha University Organized Its First Online Summer School with Wuhan University to Train Medical Students on Blood Separation Techniques

Under the auspices of Prof. Nasser El-Gizawy, President of Benha University, Prof. Jehan Abdel Hadi, Vice President for postgraduate Studies and Research, inaugurated the virtual international summer school organized by Benha University in collaboration with Wuhan University in China.
The event was attended by Prof. Hazem Aliwa, Academic Director of Benha University in Al-Obour, Prof. Maha Rashwan, a lecturer in Hematology at Benha Medical School, and coordinators of some academic programs offered at the Al-Obour campus.
Prof. Jehan Abdel Hadi noted that the organization of this summer school reflects Benha University's commitment to utilizing the summer vacation to enhance its students' academic skills and to familiarize them with the latest scientific developments in their fields and related disciplines, thereby refining their skills and preparing them to compete in the job market.
The Vice President added that 50 students from Benha University are participating in the training, representing programs from the Faculty of Nursing and some programs from the Faculty of Science (forensic evidence, microbiology, and biochemistry). The training school lasts for 15 days and features a select group of scholars from Wuhan University, led by Prof. Fu Ling Zhu, Dean of the Faculty of Nursing, along with distinguished Chinese experts specializing in Hematology from the university's bone marrow transplant centers. At the end of the training, students will receive two certificates: one from Benha University and another from Wuhan University.
She explained that the training covers the technique of Apheresis (blood separation and its various components), a medical procedure that separates whole blood into its components. Specific components are collected or removed, while the remainder is returned to the patient's body. This technique is used to treat a variety of conditions by removing abnormal blood components or collecting healthy components for blood transfusions or other treatments. She also pointed out that this technique is considered modern in therapy and has many applications for treating various diseases, such as collecting stem cells for bone marrow transplantation or treating blood disorders like sickle cell anemia, leukemia, autoimmune disorders, and neurological conditions like myasthenia gravis or Guillain-Barré syndrome, or removing excess cholesterol in cases of familial hypercholesterolemia.
Wuhan University is one of the prestigious global universities ranked among the top 160 universities worldwide. The hospitals of Wuhan University played a crucial role in controlling the COVID-19 pandemic in China in 2019, and it has been a friendly university to Benha University for about ten years.
