Under the auspices of:
• Prof. Nasser El-Gizawy, President of Benha University,
• Prof. Amjad Hegazy, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, the faculty
organized an educational seminar titled “Water Conservation: A Responsibility and Duty” in collaboration with the Kalyobiya Drinking Water and Sanitation Holding Company.
Seminar Overview:
1. Coordination and Participants:
• Prof. Sherin El-Shoury, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development, highlighted the seminar's coordination with Mrs. Rania Moataz, Assistant Secretary-General for Community Service and Environmental Development.
• Guest speakers included Mr. Hossam Mashhour, Awareness Officer at the Kalyobiya Drinking Water and Sanitation Company, and Mr. Badr Adel, representative of the Kalyobiya Irrigation Directorate.
2. Core Themes:
• Water as a Lifeline: Prof. El-Shoury emphasized that “water is the foundation of life, demanding rational use and innovative solutions for its preservation.” She referenced the Quranic verse: “And We made from water every living thing” (Quran 21:30), reinforcing water's sacred and existential value.
• Urgency of Action: With climate change and rising consumption, water conservation is no longer optional but a “critical necessity” to ensure sustainability.
3. Practical Conservation Strategies:
• Beyond Reduction: Conservation involves optimal usage—not merely reducing consumption. Key steps include:
• Repairing leaks promptly.
• Adopting water-efficient tools (e.g., low-flow faucets).
• Timing irrigation to minimize evaporation.
• Raising awareness through community campaigns.
• Holistic Approach: Integrating individual responsibility, technological innovation, and policy frameworks to combat waste.
• The seminar concluded with a plea to “instill environmental awareness and responsibility in future generations,” framing water as a “national treasure” that must be safeguarded from misuse.
• Emphasis was placed on collective action to protect water resources for current and future generations.
Broader Implications:
• Interdisciplinary Collaboration: The event showcased partnerships between academia, government agencies, and utilities to address water security challenges.
• Ethical and Pragmatic Balance: Merging religious teachings, ethical imperatives, and technical solutions to foster a culture of conservation.
This initiative aligns with Egypt's national strategy to mitigate water scarcity, underscoring Benha University's commitment to societal and environmental stewardship.
