Using Solar-Powered Lights in Benha University's Student Dormitories

Under the patronage of Prof.Dr. Nasser Al-Gizawy, President of Benha University; Prof.Dr. Gehan Abdel Hady, Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Research; and Prof.Dr. Taha Ashour, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, the University's Administrative Quality Systems Unit team implemented procedures for rationalizing electricity consumption by utilizing solar-powered lights. A number of these lights have been installed in the university dormitories.
This initiative is part of the university's preparation to apply for Environmental Management System certification according to the ISO 14001:2015 standard, fulfilling the standard's requirements which mandate procedures for resource conservation through rationalizing consumption.
This was carried out under the supervision of Dr. Abdel Qader Abdel Karim, General Coordinator of Administrative Quality at the University, in cooperation with Dr.Sayed Abdel-Wanis, General Supervisor of University Dormitories, and Dr.Awadallah, Director General of University Dormitories.
Dr. Nasser El-Gizawy emphasized that Benha University is keen on achieving sustainable development goals and Egypt's Vision 2030 through its academic, research, and community activities. The university, like other academic and research institutions, is a key partner in achieving sustainable development goals across their three dimensions – social, environmental, and economic – as it is one of the most important incubators of ideas and solutions to global problems, enabling it to create a positive impact in the field of sustainable development.
For his part, Prof.Dr. Taha Ashour pointed out that these lights store electrical energy from sunlight during the day and illuminate automatically at dusk. They are equipped with motion sensors to turn on only when people pass by, conserving their battery energy. He directed the necessity of expanding the application of this system to several other locations within the University.
