Prof. Nasser El-Gizawy, President of Benha University, honored the graduates of the first batch of the summer training program for biosafety and biosecurity. This event was attended by Prof. Gehan Abdel-Hadi, Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Research, and Prof. Mohamed Basyouni, Director of the Laboratories and Scientific Equipment Unit at the university.
During the ceremony, Prof. Nasser El-Gizawy affirmed the university's commitment to building the capacities of young researchers in various research fields, equipping them with the necessary knowledge and skills to conduct experiments safely and efficiently, thereby improving the quality of research outputs.
Prof. Gehan Abdel-Hadi added that the training program comes as part of the university's ongoing efforts to enhance researchers' competencies and provide a safe educational and research environment that meets international standards, thereby boosting researchers' skills for conducting laboratory experiments safely and efficiently while ensuring the application of biosafety standards within laboratories.
Prof. Mohamed Basyouni stated that the training program included a series of lectures and workshops covering principles of biological safety, biosafety standards, personal safety equipment for researchers, reducing biological risks in laboratories, and safe handling of materials and chemicals, including their varying degrees of hazard. Participants also learned about safety data sheets for materials and chemicals, as well as proper methods for storing, transporting, and disposing of chemicals safely and securely.
The training covered emergency plans and evacuation procedures from laboratories, understanding risk matrices, evaluating risks, and ensuring safe and ethical treatment of laboratory animals.
He added that the training was conducted by specialized professors with expertise in the field of biological safety and biosecurity.
