"El-Gizawy": Preserving our heritage enhances Egypt's status and its cultural and civilizational leadership
Prof.Dr. Nasser Al-Gizawy, President of Benha University, inaugurated the activities of the "Future of Heritage" conference, titled "Towards Heritage Sustainability," which was organized by the university at the National Water Research Center in Al-Qanater Al-Khairiya, in collaboration with Arc Space for Engineering Studies, coinciding with the celebration of World Heritage Day.The opening was attended by Prof.Dr. Gehan Abdel Hady, Vice President of the University for Graduate Studies and Research; Prof.Dr. Sherif Mohamedy, Head of the National Water Research Center in Al-Qanater Al-Khairiya; Prof.Dr. Zainab Faisal, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Benha and Rapporteur of the conference; a number of university faculty deans and vice deans; representatives from the National Water Research Center; the Secretary-General of the University; and several heritage experts and specialists.
In his speech, Prof.Dr. Nasser El-Gizawy emphasized that the heritage conference organized by Benha University in its third edition stems from its profound belief in the value of heritage as the nation's memory and roots, from which it derives its strength and identity, and simultaneously as a gateway to the future, where the past meets the present to forge a new vision for sustainable development and cultural renaissance. The goal is to explore ways to preserve our tangible and intangible heritage and employ it in the service of society, thereby enhancing Egypt's status and its cultural and civilizational leadership. He noted that the conference has become an established platform bringing together researchers, thinkers, and those interested in heritage issues from across the Arab world.
El-Gizawy added that the conference pays special attention to the heritage of Qalyubia Governorate, that ancient governorate which hosts prominent landmarks reflecting the richness and diversity of Egyptian history. Among the most notable of these landmarks are the Al-Qanater Al-Khairiya (Beneficial Dams/Barrages), which represent a unique model of architecture and engineering serving agriculture and irrigation, as well as being a civilizational symbol tied to the memory of Egyptians across generations. He pointed out that the conference addresses an important aspect of the governorate's distinctive folk heritage, including traditional clothing that reflects the local community's identity and cultural distinctiveness, and highlights the aesthetics of handicrafts passed down through generations. It also sheds light on the journey of the Holy Family in Qalyubia, a path of great spiritual and historical value that embodies Egypt's status as a blessed land that hosted this sacred journey, opening new horizons for religious and cultural tourism in the governorate.
The University President extended his thanks and appreciation to the National Water Research Center in Al-Qanater Al-Khairiya for hosting this edition of the conference, reflecting the spirit of productive cooperation among national institutions. He also thanked the conference sponsors and organizing committees who made great efforts in preparation and organization, to present this scientific and cultural event in a distinguished manner befitting Benha University and Egypt's civilizational standing.
