Under the auspices of Prof. Nasser El-Gizawy, President of Benha University, the Fifth Postgraduate Conference in Applied Sciences was inaugurated under the theme “Applied Sciences for a Smart, Healthy, and Sustainable Future.” The event is organized by the university's Postgraduate Studies and Research Sector and is held from May 5–6 at Dr. Hossam El-Attar Hall, Obour campus.
The opening was attended by Prof. Gehan Abdel Hady, Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Research and Conference Chair; Prof. Taha Ashour, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development; deans and vice deans of faculties; assistant secretaries; as well as delegations from universities in China, Turkey, the Czech Republic, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen, alongside representatives from various universities, research centers, and educational institutions.
Keynote speakers included Dr. Magid Ismail, Executive Director of the Egyptian Space Agency; Dr. Rasha Sharaf, Secretary-General of the Education Development Fund at the Cabinet; Dr. Ibrahim El-Sherbiny, President of Zewail City of Science and Technology; Dr. Sun Minning, Professor at the College of Life Sciences, Central China Agricultural University; and Dr. Li Aibao, Professor of Crop Breeding at the same university.
In his address, Prof. El-Gizawy emphasized that research outputs at Benha University are not merely published papers, but practical solutions to real-world problems and innovative ideas that open new horizons for knowledge investment. He noted that the annual postgraduate conference in applied sciences reflects the university's vision to be a leading hub of innovation and creativity, a beacon for knowledge investment, and a driver of positive change. He stressed that innovation is the bridge to a better future.
Prof. El-Gizawy explained that Benha University has placed innovation at the heart of its strategy, recognizing that investing in knowledge is the best path to building a prosperous future. The university not only supports researchers in producing knowledge but also seeks to transform it into added value that serves society and contributes to sustainable development. He highlighted policies encouraging applied research projects with direct impact, strengthening partnerships with industrial and economic institutions, and providing an enabling environment for students and researchers to develop ideas into executable innovations.
He urged students to benefit from conference sessions and workshops, enriching scientific discussions to support innovation and apply knowledge to practical challenges.
Prof. Gehan Abdel Hady stated that organizing the conference at this time reflects deep awareness of the vital role applied sciences play in shaping the future, especially amid rapid global transformations in advanced technology, artificial intelligence, healthcare applications, and environmental sustainability. She emphasized that applied sciences are no longer just academic fields but fundamental pillars for comprehensive development and building societies capable of adapting to modern changes.
She highlighted the crucial role of postgraduate students as the backbone of scientific research and the hope of the future. The conference, she said, serves as a high-level scientific platform for exchanging ideas, presenting the latest research outcomes, and linking scientific research to community needs and sustainable development plans. It also provides a genuine opportunity to enhance interdisciplinary integration and open new avenues for collaboration between universities, research centers, and industry sectors.
Prof. Abdel Hady expressed pride in the distinguished international participation, particularly from Chinese scholars whose expertise enriches the conference. She noted that such participation reflects strong academic ties and underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing shared challenges and building strategic partnerships based on knowledge exchange.
Dr. Hesham Rashid, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Conference Rapporteur, explained that the conference covers themes in medical and health sciences, basic sciences, environmental and agricultural sciences, with a focus on smart applications, digital transformation, and sustainable solutions for society. He added that this year's conference features 97 research papers across all themes, with 400 researchers attending. Accepted papers will be published in a special issue of the Benha Journal of Applied Sciences after peer review and plagiarism checks.
