Under the auspices of Prof. Nasser El-Gizawy, President of Benha University, Prof. Taha Ashour, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, inaugurated the activities of the second cohort of the "Benha University Ambassadors for Sustainable Development and Climate" initiative for faculty members.
The event was attended by Prof. Mohamed Basyouni, Director of the Sustainable Development and Climate Change Unit, Ms. Rania Moataz, Assistant Secretary of the University for Community Service and Environmental Development, and several faculty members participating in the initiative.
Prof. Taha Ashour emphasized that Benha University prioritizes sustainability and climate action by adopting policies and procedures aimed at reducing carbon emissions, gradually expanding the use of new and renewable energy sources, and increasing green spaces within the university campus. This effort enhances environmental preservation and boosts the university's competitiveness in global rankings that measure universities' commitment to sustainable development goals.
The Vice President added that the university is taking steady steps toward achieving carbon neutrality by implementing several initiatives within the community service sector aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of various university activities. This includes rationalizing energy and water consumption, expanding environmentally friendly solutions, and raising environmental awareness among university members, aligning with Egypt's Vision 2030 and the National Climate Change Strategy 2050.
Prof. Taha Ashour pointed out that the "Benha University Ambassadors for Sustainable Development and Climate" initiative aims to build the capacities of faculty members and prepare them to be ambassadors for sustainable development and climate both within and outside the university. The initiative seeks to promote a culture of sustainability in the community through a comprehensive training program that includes a series of interactive courses, practices, and field visits, addressing development patterns and sustainable development goals, thereby preparing academic cadres capable of supporting sustainable development efforts and achieving their objectives.
