Microscopic Endoscopic Surgery Ended the Suffering of a Girl with a Complex Congenital Chest Defect at Benha University Hospitals

A medical team in the Department of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery at Benha University Hospitals successfully ended the suffering of an 11-year-old girl who had been suffering for years from a complex congenital defect characterized by severe pectus excavatum, which caused continuous pressure on the heart muscle, severe breathing difficulties, and persistent fatigue with minimal exertion.
This achievement came under the auspices of:
• Prof. Nasser El-Gizawy, President of Benha University;
• Prof. Mohamed Al-Ashhab, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Hospitals' Board of Directors;
• Prof. Amr El-Dakhakhni, Executive Director of Benha University Hospitals,
• Prof. Ibrahim Qasab, Head of the Department of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery,
• Prof. Ehab Saeed, Head of the Anesthesia Department.
The medical team explained that after conducting thorough examinations and evaluations of the case, it was decided to proceed with surgical intervention to repair the defect using endoscopic surgical techniques, avoiding traditional surgeries that involve large chest incisions and the complications that may accompany them.
The operation was performed through only two small incisions and lasted about two hours, during which the defect was fully repaired with cosmetic closure of the wound, reflecting the medical capabilities and modern techniques that Benha University Hospitals are known for.
The girl was taken off the ventilators without the need for additional respiratory support and was transferred to the inpatient department for monitoring her condition and vital signs, before being discharged from the hospital in good health to resume her normal life.
The surgery was performed by the cardiac and thoracic surgery team, led by:
