Cooperation Protocol Between the Engineering Studies and Consulting Center at Shubra Engineering, Benha University, and the Ministry of Housing for Safe Closure of Public Dumps

Signed a cooperation protocol between the Engineering Studies and Consulting Center at the faculty and the Ministry of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, represented by the New Urban Communities Authority. This agreement pertains to supervising the implementation of safe closure projects for public dumps in new cities.
Prof. Nasser El-Gizawy stated that the signing of the protocol reflects the distinguished strategy of Benha University in linking scientific research with industry and addressing community issues. He emphasized that scientific research is a fundamental driver for progress and development. He noted that the Engineering Studies and Consulting Center at the Faculty of Engineering in Shubra comprises a group of experts and consultants in various engineering fields, providing the latest global technologies and employing modern devices and techniques in engineering domains.
Prof. El-Gizawy added that the safe closure projects for public dumps represent an important step towards achieving sustainable development and protecting the environment and public health. He explained that rehabilitating these sites allows for future utilization, transforming them into green spaces and energy-producing projects, which contribute to improving air quality, eliminating unpleasant odors, and reducing the spread of insects and diseases, as well as enhancing the mental and social well-being of residents.
The President of Benha University pointed out that the environmental and urban development of these sites yields positive returns on the surrounding areas by beautifying them, increasing their value, and enhancing investment opportunities.
Prof. Mohamed Said clarified that implementing safe closure projects for public dumps in new cities is an urgent necessity, especially after the expiration of the dumps' lifespan. He noted that untreated waste poses a continuous threat to public health and the environment. The closure works are carried out according to approved engineering and environmental standards, using insulating layers and soil stabilization to prevent the leakage of harmful microbes and gases, and to protect groundwater and soil from toxic leachate.
The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Shubra emphasized that the engineering closure of dumps not only reduces environmental risks but also opens economic opportunities from the sites, by capturing and utilizing methane gas produced from the decomposition of organic materials and converting it through special generators into sustainable electrical energy. This contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving sustainable economic and environmental returns.

The center has participated in preparing studies, designs, and supervising the implementation of numerous projects in housing, roads, bridges, utilities, infrastructure, and new urban communities, as well as educational, medical, administrative, service, and sports projects, reflecting its capability to handle projects of various sizes, types, and stages.
