Benha University is among the top 300 universities worldwide in the 2026 Green University Ranking and is ranked first nationally and across Africa in the energy criterion.

Prof. Nasser El-Gizawy, President of Benha University, announced that the university has continued to advance in the Indonesian GreenMetric University Ranking for 2026, ranking among the top 500 universities globally. It achieved the 253rd position out of 2,016 universities representing 105 countries worldwide, advancing 10 places compared to the previous edition. On both local and African levels, the university ranked among the top five universities, securing the fourth position among Egyptian and African universities in this year's ranking.
Prof. El-Gizawy pointed out that the GreenMetric ranking is one of the most important international rankings that measures universities' commitment to participating in the development of environmentally friendly infrastructure. This ranking organizes universities according to sustainable development processes and their adherence to clean environmental standards.
Prof. Gehan Abdel Hady, Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Research, stated that the university has maintained its advanced local ranking, coming in first among Egyptian and African universities in the energy and climate change criterion, and second nationally in waste management. It also ranked among the top five Egyptian universities in the water and transportation criteria.
She explained that the UI GreenMetric ranking for 2026 includes seven main criteria to measure universities' performance in sustainable development, with the addition of a new criterion compared to the previous edition. These criteria include:
* Infrastructure and smart buildings,
* Energy and climate change,
* Waste management,
* Water,
* Transportation,
* Education and research,
* Governance and digitalization.
This year's ranking saw an increase in the number of participating universities globally by approximately 271 universities, with 46 Egyptian universities (public, private, and national) included in the ranking, an increase of 8 universities compared to the previous edition.
