This study was perfol111ed on fifty five male humans with an age ranging from thirty to sixty two years. Fifty of these cases were bilharzial, twenty with bilharzial ureters and thirty cases with bilharzial urinarybladders. Five cases were non bilharzial and served as controls.Cryostat sections were prepared and fixed in acetone, then stainedwith Haematoxylin and Eosin for the general morphology and withInullunoperoxidase stain in combination with a specific antibody forlocalization of cellular antigens via the enzyme peroxidase. The histological changes in bilharzial urinal)’ bladders and uretersrevealed that the epithelium showed hyperplastic changes. The laminapropria showed congestion, and chronic inflarnrnatory cells, with massive •deposits of bilharzial ova.The Inununohistological picture showed that Pan T Lymphocytes(T3) were demonstrated within epithelium and lamina propria in nonbilharzial and bilharzial urinary bladders and uerters. Their number inbilharzial specimens had a highly significant increase than that in nonbilharzial specimens. The helper/Inducer Lymphocytes (T4) were demonstrated withinepithelium and lamina propria in bilharzial and non bilharzial urinarybladders and ureters. Their number in bilharzial specimens had a hightly .significant mcrease than that in bilharzial speCImens. Thesuppressor/cytotoxic Lymphocytes (Tg) were demonstrated withinepithelium and lamina propria in bilharzial and non bilharzial urinary97bladders and ureters. The number in bilharzial specimens had a significantincrease than that in non bilharzial specimens. In non bilharzial unnary bladderes and ureters respictively nopositively statined B cells were detected in the epithelium and laminapropria. In bilharzial urinary bladders and ureters, the lamina propria andsubmucosa were infiltrated with B lymphocytes.Few macrophages were found in epitherlium and lamina propria ofnon bilharzial urinary bladders and ureters. In bilharzial urinary bladdersand ureters, there was infiltiration of macrophages in lamina propria. Thestatistical analysis denoted a high difference between non bilharzia! andbilharzial groups. The reacting cells of anti-HLDR antibodies were found in a fewnumber in epithelium and lamina propria of non bilharzial urinary bladdersand ureters. There was a definit increase of cells in lamina propria. In nonbilharzial urinary bladders and ureters the reacting cells ofanti-Leukocyte anti-bodies were detected in the epithelium and laminapropria in few numbers. There was increased infiltration with leukocytecells in the lamina propria and in between ova in bilharzial urinarybladders and ureters. In conclusion this study suggests that an active immune response.was enhanced in the bilharzial bladder and ureter biopsies. This studycould be A useful reference when applying this mode of investigation topathological conditions.
