-145-CHAPTBR IXAnxiety is the state of expecting danger or preparingfor it even though this danger might be an unknown one.Normal anxiety had been always part of the fabric of everyday life. It was widespread and affected everybody. Atschool, work and even in leisure time activities, anxietymight be present.This work was intended to study the impact of anxietyon scholastic achievement among a sample of secondaryschool stu4ents in Kaliubia Governorate.The study included a mUltistage stratified randomsample of pupils of both sexes from the first and secondyear of public secondary schools at different educationalzones in Kaliubia. Schools were chosen from educationalzones at random. Two classes were chosen randomly fromeach school: A class from the first year and ~nother fromthe second year. The study was carried out on a total of38 classes including 1045 male and female pupils with agesranged between 15-19 years.The standardized Arabic translation of Taylor’s testwas used to assess the level of anxiety among pupils.- --- -- - -- --- -- -- - ._-- - ~-146-A questionnairefollowing:a- Individual features of pupils including age and sex.b- Social features including residence, educational zone,crowding index and social score.c- Familial Features including nUmber andsiblings, Parental age, consanguinity andeducation.was designed to identify thetype ofparentald- certain risks including birth order, practice ofhobbies, smoking, masturbation, medical history, numberof intimate friends, academic rank, relation with peersand teacher, satisfaction with school curriculum,history of failure, family coherence and familialpsychological troubles as well as scholasticachievement which was obtained from school records.The present study concluded the following:1- Anxiety was found to be widely spread among adolescentsas they all tend to be anxious at this particularperiod.2- A significant difference of the level of anxiety wasfound between male and female pupils. Higher anxietylevels were encountered among female pupils.3- Positive significant correlation was found between ageand anxiety level.4- Significant zonal differencesanxiety levels were encounteredKhanka and Kafr Shokr zones.were observed. Higheramong Banha, Tokh, El-147-5- The number of intimate friends in ’relation to anxietylevel was statistically significant.6- Pupils bad relation with peers and teacher and nonsatisfactionwith school curriculum were behind theprecipitation of anxiety.7- Father’s occupation significantlypupils. Higher anxiety levels werepupils whose fathers were holdingmanual jobs.8- Social and socioeconomic conditions had positivesignificant effect on anxiety. Higher anxiety scoreswere encountered among pupils from middle and highsocial classes.affects anxiety ofencountered amongsemiskilled and9- The role of the environmental factors was more obviousthan genetic factors in precipitation of anxiety.10- Bad parental relation and incoherent families werebehind the precipitation of anxiety.11- Anxiety significantly affects scholastic achievement.Anxiety was one of the best predictors of scholasticachievement among the coherent group.The recommendation of this study is the applicationand implementation of a school guidance program toalleviate high anxiety level among pupils enrolled in thedifferent educational zones of Kaliubia Governorate. |
