The preoperative diagnosis of renal tumours in general depends mainly on their radiological appearance, beside the available clinical data. The introduction of the new imaging techniques such as ultrasonography and computed tomography as diagnostic modalities has put a new horizon in the scope of investigation of the renal masses. However, the conventional methods of invest-igations using intravenous pyelography, nephrotomography and renal angiography still have their indispensable role in these cases. In this work we aimed of reviewing the literature of this subject with an attempt to formulate a scheme to be followed in the investigation of cases with renal masses. In the plain urinary tract Emmett and Witten, 1977 stated that calcification occurs in 3 per cent of renal cysts and it is rare in the benign renal tumours. These tumours if large may result in localized bulging or deformity of the renal shadow. |
