The upper respiratory tract infections amongschool age childrens.- The upper respiratory tract infections are :common cald, otitis media, sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsilitis Epiglottitis and croup. The incidence of upper respiratory tract infectionsincrease during winter due to repeated exposureto infections in this season and the overcrawded pupilsat schools with poor ventilation classrooms. There was no significant difference in incidenceof infections between males and females.oThe diseases showed different presentations byeither gradual or rather sudden onset. It was found that the causative agents in incidenceof upper respiratory tract infections may beviruses , Bacteria (the most iffiportantbacterial organismsgroup B-haemolytic streptococcal organism)andMycoplasma. It was concluded that penicillin is the drug ofchoice in treatment of cases of the upper respiratorytract infections caused by bacterial organisms only.(the viruses not affected by drugs). It also seems resonable to start treatment bypenicillin in any case of upper respiratory tractinfections except in patients allergic to it, waitingfor the results of cUlture and sensitivity test whichis recomended in such cases.o |
